National Park De Alde Feanen offers wonderful hiking opportunities!
There are several hiking trails around Earnewâld to various bird-watching huts and observation towers. Visit the tourist office for more info on the different trails or use the Hiking app. You can also visit the Visitor Center NP De Alde Feanen, where you can buy different walking leaflets and where guided walking excursions are organized on a regular basis. (Click here for the offer)
Walking around can Earnewâld can be divided into two walking areas:
Wikelslân and the 40 Mêd
On the northwest side of Earnewâld are the Wikelslân and the 40 Mêd.
The Wikelslân is a wet area (boots are recommended), it consists of alder thickets, reed beds, cap holes and stripes. A real birding area, with no less than 3 bird-watching huts and a watchtower you can look for the bittern and bearded reedling, for example. The walking route around the 40mêd leads for a large part along open waterways (the Lange Sloot) and meadow bird habitat, but also through alder forest and beautiful long jetty across an old Petgat. The hiking trails in both areas are connected and there are red posts for marking. Along the way, you will occasionally find a map or information board. If you come by car, it is best to park in the large parking lot in the center of the village (opposite Wiidswei 36) or at the parking lot at the Dominee Bolleman van der Veenweg 7B The trail app lists the various hiking trails through this area.

Jan-Durkspolder and the Pettebosk
On the southeast side of Earnewâld are the Jandurkspolder and the Pettebosk.
Pettebosk is the nature education forest of De Alde Feanen National Park. Besides being a wonderful place to walk, there is a paved (wheelchair-friendly) walking path and several nature education routes where children (as well as adults) can playfully learn about nature in De Alde Feanen. You can find all the information you need at the NP De Alde Feanen Visitor Center. The Jandurkspolder is best known to lovers of ice skating and natural ice as the place where skating is often fairly quick. But around the Jandurkspolder there is also a very nice hiking trail. This takes you past several bird-watching huts and an observation tower. Boots are also recommended for this hike; it can be boggy. If you come by car, it is best to park at the visitor center at Koaidyk 8. The trail app contains hiking trails through this area.
