Leeuwarden is the proud capital of Fryslân. Starting and finishing place of the Elfstedentocht. A surprising city with an attractive and green center. Leeuwarden is bustling! The proof? Leeuwarden had been named Culture Capital of Europe in 2018! Under the name Leeuwarden – Fryslân 2018, the city and province showed what makes Leeuwarden and  Fryslân special through an artistically promising program.

With Friesland , Leeuwarden was the European Capital of Culture in 2018. Arcadia is the first trienalle to follow this up. Arcadia offers an open-air stage for (inter)national art makers for one hundred summer days. With a walking forest in the streets of Leeuwarden. Featuring an international, fine art exhibition in the greenery of Oranjewoud. Or with the most legendary Elfstedentocht since climate change became a thing, passing right through villages and towns in one big feast of passing.

Even if you don’t come for an event, the city is well worth a visit. In the center you will find many monumental buildings along the canals. Leeuwarden’s royal past has provided wonderful spots. Leeuwarden’s most beautiful harbor is located in the city park the Prinsentuin and you can have a great time shopping, going to the cinema or eating in one of the many restaurants.
