Shanty choir The Piipegaeltsje Sjongers

The Piipegaeltsje Sjongers from the Rottefalle have existed since 1994 and will celebrate their 30th anniversary next year, they are regularly on the road to perform their shanties and sailor songs at festivals, village festivals, anniversaries, Sails, in nursing homes and at water sports activities.

The repertoire consists mainly of shanties as they were sung on board, as well as Irish, Frisian and Dutch songs about the water and sailor’s life and folk songs.

In addition to invitations to perform in their own area and wide surroundings, they travel throughout the Netherlands. Invitations for performances abroad came from Germany, Denmark and Ireland, among others.

Ireland in particular was very special, in addition to performances in various local Irish pubs, the program included room for a look at the Cliff of Moher, the coastal route, workshops, etc.

The 10th anniversary of the choir was celebrated with the performance of the revue ” Rip van Winkel”, in which not only sang, but also acted by the singers of the choir with some guest roles of the partners and children.

In Drachten, from 2000-till today, International shanty festivals were organized partly by the Piipegaeltsje Sjongers with Smallingerland’s 2 other shanty choirs, which have united in the Smallingerland Shanty Festival Foundation.

The choir the Piipegaeltsje Sjongers consists of about 18 singers and they are accompanied by a trio of accordion musicians. Three CDs have now been released. They rehearse every Wednesday night and enjoy the singing and the after-party. Also see www.piipegaeltsje-sjongers.nl
